Why Cork Businesses Choose Haven Electrical

Infrastructure You Can Rely On

Network problems caused by poor cabling — intermittent drops, slow speeds, cable failures — are expensive to diagnose and fix after the fact. Correct installation first time prevents all of this.

Clean Installation

We install cabling with proper containment, correct bending radii, no kinks, and neat dressing. Our installations look as good as they perform.

Tested and Certified

Every cable run is tested with a calibrated Fluke tester. The test report documents that each run meets Category 6 performance standards.

Coordination with IT

We’ve worked with IT contractors and MSPs across Cork for years. We understand what they need from the cabling infrastructure and we deliver it.

Data & Network Cabling FAQs

Cat6 (Category 6) is the current standard for horizontal office data cabling. It supports 10 Gigabit Ethernet at distances up to 55 metres and 1 Gigabit Ethernet at up to 100 metres. For most Cork offices, Cat6 is the correct specification — it future-proofs the installation for current and foreseeable network speeds. Cat5e is still acceptable for some applications but is increasingly considered obsolete for new installations. Cat6A is used for 10GbE at full 100m distances, data centres, and high-performance applications.
Yes — we regularly retrofit data cabling in occupied offices. We use the smallest practical containment, run cables through ceiling voids and existing trunking where possible, and phase the work to minimise disruption. For offices that are fully occupied, we plan the installation to avoid taking down critical systems. We can work evenings or weekends for installations that would otherwise require significant disruption.
A patch panel is a central termination point for all horizontal cabling in a data installation. All Cat6 cables from desk positions and outlet points terminate on the rear of the patch panel. Short patch leads are then used on the front to connect ports to the network switch. A structured patch panel arrangement makes adds, moves, and changes easy to manage, keeps the data cabinet tidy, and allows individual cable runs to be tested and re-patched without disturbing other circuits.
Yes — all structured data cabling we install is tested with a calibrated Fluke DSX-600 or equivalent cable analyser. Each run is tested for insertion loss, return loss, crosstalk, and propagation delay to confirm it meets Category 6 performance requirements. A pass/fail report is generated for each cable run and provided to the client on completion. Untested cabling is not handed over.
Yes — we install both multi-mode (OM3/OM4) and single-mode fibre optic cabling for backbone connections, data centre links, building-to-building runs, and long horizontal runs where copper won’t work. Fibre is also immune to electromagnetic interference, making it the right choice in industrial environments with significant electrical noise. We carry out fusion splicing for single-mode fibre and use pre-terminated assemblies where appropriate.
A minimum of two data points per desk position is standard for modern offices — one for the PC and one for an IP phone or docking station. For hot-desking environments or desks used with multiple monitors and devices, four points per position is common. We advise on data point counts during the site survey, factoring in your working patterns, existing equipment, and anticipated changes. Adding data points after installation is expensive, so it’s worth getting the count right upfront.
Yes — industrial data cabling requires additional consideration for cable routes (avoiding electrical interference sources, mechanical damage risks, and temperature extremes), cable type selection (industrial Cat6 with heavier sheathing, armoured cables for floor runs), and containment (dedicated data trunking separated from power wiring). We have experience installing data infrastructure in Cork factories and warehouses alongside our industrial electrical work.
We work alongside IT contractors and managed service providers regularly. We discuss the patch panel layout, cabinet position, outlet numbering convention, and any specific requirements with your IT team before installation begins. We provide the as-built cabling schedule in a format that works for their records. Good communication between the cabling contractor and the IT team avoids the classic problem of cabling that’s physically installed but impossible to manage sensibly.
