Smoke & CO Alarm FAQs

Yes — current Irish building regulations (Building Regulations Part B) require mains-wired, interlinked smoke alarms in new builds and properties undergoing significant renovation or extension. Battery-only alarms are not compliant for these situations. For existing homes without renovation, battery-operated interlinked alarms are acceptable but mains-wired is always recommended.
Irish building regulations require a smoke alarm in every circulation area (hallways, landings) and in every room where a fire could start. For a typical Cork home, this means at minimum one on each floor level, with additional alarms in bedrooms and living spaces. A heat alarm (not smoke) is required in the kitchen. We assess each property individually and advise on the correct number and positions.
Yes — if you have a gas boiler, gas hob, solid fuel stove, open fire, or any fuel-burning appliance, you need a carbon monoxide alarm in the same room or adjacent area. CO is odourless and colourless, and is responsible for the majority of accidental poisoning deaths in Irish homes. Current Irish building regulations require CO alarms in all new builds with fuel-burning appliances.
Interlinked means all alarms in the property are connected — when one alarm detects smoke or heat, all alarms in the house sound simultaneously. This is critical in larger homes or when bedrooms are far from the kitchen or utility areas. Mains-wired alarms are interlinked via the wiring; radio-interlinked alarms communicate wirelessly. Both meet the regulations.
Yes — under Irish law (the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations), all rented properties must have a mains-wired smoke alarm on every floor level, a carbon monoxide alarm in every room with a fuel-burning appliance, and all alarms must be in working order. Landlords are legally responsible for compliance. We carry out alarm installations and upgrades for Cork landlords regularly.
Most smoke alarms have a lifespan of 10 years from the manufacture date. After 10 years, the sensing element degrades and the alarm may not respond correctly. The manufacture date is on the back of the unit. If your alarms are approaching or past 10 years, they should be replaced. We carry out alarm replacements and upgrades across Cork.
Yes — a CO alarm should be fitted in any room or adjacent space where a gas boiler is installed. CO can migrate through gaps under doors and into living areas. If the utility room is enclosed, an alarm there is essential; an additional alarm in the adjacent hallway is also advisable. We’ll advise on the correct positions during the free survey.
Yes — this is one of our most common alarm jobs across Cork, particularly in older homes and rental properties. We run mains wiring to each alarm position and fit new compliant mains-wired interlinked alarms. The job typically takes half a day for a standard three-bedroom home. We give you a fixed price after a free survey.
