Emergency Electrical Repairs FAQs

An electrical emergency is any situation where there is an immediate safety risk — exposed live wiring, burning smell from sockets or the consumer unit, complete loss of power to the property, repeated circuit tripping that you can’t restore safely, or signs of electrical fire. If you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency, call us and describe the problem — we’ll advise you honestly.
Response times depend on our current workload and your location in Cork. Call us on 021 203 2045 and we’ll give you an honest estimate of how quickly we can get to you. We cover all areas of Cork City and County and we prioritise genuine safety emergencies.
Switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit immediately if you can do so safely, and do not use the socket or fitting. If you can smell burning from the consumer unit itself, switch off the main switch and do not restore power. Call us or contact ESB Networks on 1800 372 999 if the situation feels dangerous. Do not leave burning electrical equipment unattended.
Turn off the main switch on your consumer unit if there is any risk of fire or if wiring appears burnt or damaged. Do not use affected sockets or fittings. Keep children and pets away from any exposed or damaged wiring. Don’t attempt to investigate or repair faults yourself — wait for a Safe Electric registered electrician to assess the situation.
Electrical faults caused by your own DIY work, or failure to maintain the installation, can affect insurance claims. Having all electrical work carried out by a Safe Electric registered electrician and keeping the certification protects your position. We issue a written report after every emergency job confirming the fault cause and remedial work completed.
It depends on why it’s tripping. If the RCD trips when you turn on a specific appliance, that appliance is likely at fault — unplug it and the power should restore. If the RCD keeps tripping without a clear cause, or trips repeatedly after being reset, there may be a wiring fault that needs investigation. Call us and describe the symptoms — we’ll advise on urgency.
We apply a standard call-out rate plus the cost of any repair work. We give you both figures clearly before we start. We do not apply excessive emergency surcharges — we want to help people in Cork who are in a difficult situation, not take advantage of them.
The most common emergency calls we receive are for tripping consumer units, partial or complete power loss, burning smells from old sockets or wiring, and damage caused by storms or flood. Older Cork properties with ageing wiring are more susceptible to faults. If your home is pre-1990s and hasn’t had an electrical inspection, it’s worth having a condition report done.
