Cork’s Generator & Backup Power Specialists

Haven Electrical install backup generator systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for businesses across Cork City and County. Power outages are costly — for a food processing facility in Ringaskiddy, a data centre in Cork city, or a care home in Carrigaline, maintaining power during a grid outage isn’t optional. We carry out the full electrical installation: changeover switchgear, generator connections, earthing and bonding, load testing, and certification. We work with generator suppliers across Cork and can advise on generator sizing, fuel management, and maintenance requirements. All generator electrical work is carried out by RECI-registered electricians.

Generator & Backup Power FAQs

Generator sizing is based on the total electrical load of the circuits you need to support during a mains failure. This isn’t simply the sum of all your circuit breakers — it requires a proper assessment of actual running loads, motor starting currents, power factor, and any non-linear loads such as UPS systems or variable speed drives. We carry out a full load assessment before specifying a generator. Getting the sizing wrong in either direction is an expensive mistake.
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) monitors the incoming mains supply and automatically starts the generator and transfers the load when it detects a supply failure. Without an ATS, someone has to manually start the generator and operate the changeover switch — which means your premises is dark until someone gets there. For most commercial and industrial applications, an ATS is essential. We design and install ATS panels to suit your generator capacity and load requirements.
A typical diesel generator requires 10–30 seconds to start from cold, warm up, and stabilise before it can accept load. With a correctly specified ATS, the total transfer time from mains failure to generator supply is typically 10–20 seconds for most commercial installations. For equipment that cannot tolerate any supply interruption (servers, life-safety systems), a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) bridges the gap during generator start-up.
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) provides instantaneous battery-backed power the moment mains supply is lost — with no transfer delay. For critical equipment like servers, control systems, or life-safety systems, the 10–20 second generator start-up time can cause problems. The UPS bridges this gap, holding the critical loads on battery until the generator is running. Most robust backup power designs for critical applications combine UPS systems with a generator.
A standby generator may require planning permission depending on its size, noise output, fuel storage capacity, and location. External generators are generally considered development. We advise customers to check with Cork City or County Council on their specific installation before proceeding. We can provide the technical information you need for a planning submission. Smaller internal generators or those within an existing plant room are often exempt.
Generator earthing is critical for both safety and equipment protection. An incorrectly earthed generator can create dangerous touch voltages on equipment casings, damage sensitive electronics, and cause nuisance tripping of RCDs. The correct earthing approach depends on whether the generator is operating as a TN, TT, or IT system, and how the neutral is handled at the transfer switch. We design the earthing arrangement correctly for each installation — it’s not something to improvise.
Yes — we offer maintenance contracts for generator electrical systems we install. This covers regular testing of the ATS, inspection of electrical connections, load bank testing of the generator, and checking fuel levels and battery condition on auto-start systems. Generator manufacturers typically recommend at least annual maintenance and a monthly no-load test run. We’ll put a maintenance plan in place as part of the handover.
Yes — we regularly upgrade and extend existing generator and backup power systems. Common upgrade projects include fitting ATS panels to existing manual changeover installations, upgrading undersized generators, extending the generator to cover additional circuits, and replacing aging UPS systems. We assess the existing installation and design the upgrade to integrate correctly with what’s there.
