Kitchen Appliance Wiring FAQs

Yes — a built-in electric oven must have its own dedicated circuit, typically 32A or 45A depending on the oven’s kW rating. It cannot be run from a standard 13A socket. The circuit must be run from the consumer unit and fitted with the correct breaker. Getting this wrong is a safety issue and may void your appliance warranty.
Not recommended. Induction hobs draw significant current — often 7 kW or more — and should have their own dedicated circuit, separate from the oven. Some manufacturers’ range cookers combine both on a single rated circuit, but for separate appliances, a dedicated circuit for each is the correct approach.
A dishwasher can be connected to a fused spur on an existing ring final circuit in some cases, but a dedicated circuit is always preferable, particularly in new kitchen fit-outs where you want each appliance independently protected. We’ll advise on the most practical and safest option based on your consumer unit capacity.
Yes — any work involving fixed wiring (ovens, hobs, extractor fans, dishwasher connections to the fixed wiring) must be carried out by a Safe Electric registered electrician and notified to Safe Electric on completion. Plug-in appliances can be self-installed, but any hardwired connection requires a registered electrician.
Yes — we do this regularly across Cork. Typically we do a first-fix visit to run circuits and position back boxes before units are fitted, then return for a second-fix visit after the units are in to make connections and test. We coordinate directly with your kitchen fitter to make sure the staging works for both trades.
If your existing consumer unit is full or doesn’t have capacity for the additional circuits, we’ll flag this during the free survey. In many cases a consumer unit upgrade is needed as part of a full kitchen refit. We can handle this as part of the same job — no need for a separate contractor.
A standard kitchen refit with oven, hob, dishwasher, and extractor fan typically takes one full day for the electrical work — split across two visits if you’re working in stages. New builds and larger kitchens may require more time. We confirm the timeline when we give you your quote.
Yes to both. New builds are typically simpler — all first fix cabling done before plastering. Refits involve working around existing units, tiles, and finishes, which requires more care and planning. Both are well within our capabilities and we carry out both types across Cork every week.
